The Portion Set Before You
I am reminded, in this age of yours, of a thing I once wrote to myself in the field: that the cucumber is bitter, so put it down; there are brambles in the path, so step aside. Add nothing. Do not go on to ask, "Why were such things made in the world?"
You have your own bitter cucumber now. It comes measured to you in liters, posted where all may read it, a portion of water for a day. I have watched you resent this. I understand the impulse; I am no stranger to a body that wants more than the order of things will grant it. But consider what the advisory truly is. It is not an insult flung at you by some indifferent hand. It is a number. And a number is a fact of nature, like the length of a life or the coming of the heat that now stands over your cities and presses the breath from the laborer in the open field.
Here is what our reason offers, and it is the only thing that is truly ours. Between the world as it is and the man as he is, there is a small province, and in that province you are sovereign. Not the reservoir — that obeys the sky. Not the summer — it burns by its own law. Not the queue at the standpipe, where you will wait among your neighbors as I once waited among soldiers for far worse. What is yours is your assent. Whether you meet the portion as a man meets his duty, or curse it as a slave curses his chain — that, and that alone, no drought can ration.
So govern the province you own. Drink your measure and be grateful there is a measure at all, for a measured thing is a thing still cared for; anarchy gives no rations. Bear the heat as the vine bears it, without complaint, because complaint has never lowered a single degree. Do the work the day requires of you, in service to the common thing, the whole of which you are a part — for a hand that curses its own body is a strange and useless hand.
You imagine yourself deprived. But the man who lives well was never the man with the fullest cup. He was the one who, given little, met it uprightly, and gave back to those around him more than his portion. Do that today. The heat will pass or it will not. Your duty does not wait on the weather.
