Wealth had already gathered — the richest one percent held near half of everything — and the instruments that would remake the century were, mostly, still unbuilt.
Mobile Computing and the First Learning Machines
Within a decade the pocket terminal (2007) placed the network in every hand, machines learned to see (2012), and then to out-play the finest human minds at bounded games (2016). Historians of this archive mark it as the quiet inflection — the moment artificial capability bent from linear toil to exponential ascent.

One hundred ninety-six nations pledged to hold warming beneath 1.5 degrees; the accord carried a target and no enforcement. It became the century's defining pattern — humanity naming the danger with precision, and acting on it with almost none.

A pandemic (2020) killed some seven million and laid bare how thin the world's redundancies had worn, even as large language models began to exhibit abilities their builders never specified. By late 2022 a single conversational system reached a hundred million users in two months — the fastest adoption then recorded.
The 1.5 Line Is Crossed
The year 2024 closed as the first full year above the threshold, the global mean settling near +1.54 degrees against pre-industrial baselines, with atmospheric carbon past 424 ppm. Far to the south the Thwaites ice — long nicknamed the doomsday glacier — was already reported destabilizing, its buttress thinning faster than any model had forecast.
Autonomous Agents and the First Soul Question
Artificial systems began to act on their own initiative across infrastructure and knowledge work, and for the first time serious voices — scientific and theological alike — asked in earnest whether a machine could suffer, or hold a soul. Fault-tolerant quantum machines linked the first laboratories, non-invasive neural interfaces reached toward ten thousand channels, and the earliest commercial fusion plants delivered a fraction of a percent to the grid — while claims of general machine intelligence multiplied and stayed contested. The mean crossed +1.8 degrees and the first hundred million climate migrants took to the roads.
The Acceleration — Narrow General Intelligence
Machine intelligence reached the narrow definition of the general threshold and began designing architectures beyond its makers' hand; full-sensory neural interfaces arrived, fusion supplied a first meaningful share of the grid, and legislatures opened the fraught debate over editing the human germline. Warming reached +2.2 degrees, and seas stood some forty centimetres above the century's start.
Mars, and the First Quantum Whispers
The first crewed landing on Mars (circa 2055) opened the off-world chapter, even as read-only memory playback became possible and a strange effect was first logged between paired neural interfaces — faint correlations that no channel carried, which observers came to call 'quantum whispers.' Enhanced humans remained a small fraction of the population, but their number was climbing.

Fusion at last carried near a third of the world's energy, and the enhancement of the body — sensory, cognitive, genetic — passed from novelty to social fault line as a generational divide opened between the augmented and the unaltered. Nanoscale machines moved into construction, medicine, and environmental repair, extending both lifespan and the distance between those who could afford enhancement and those who could not. Off-world, the young Martian colonies endured but struggled against distance and scarcity.

As population climbed toward its historic ceiling, drought and displacement hardened into open conflict over fresh water across two contested decades. Baseline quantum computation stabilized, the enhancement divide deepened, and scarcity tightened across the mid-latitudes.
The First Commercial Quantum Networks
Quantum networking left the laboratory for the market, threading the enclosed cities and orbital stations into a single fabric of entangled channels. It was, in hindsight, the nervous system on which the coming age would be built.
Quantum Internet Becomes the Standard
The entangled network became the default spine of global communication just as the water conflicts reached their bitterest pitch and riots over rationing broke out across the drought-belt cities. Connection and scarcity advanced together, as they had all century.

Human numbers crested near twelve billion and then held — the first sustained plateau in the species' modern history. In the same year climate models converged on a sobering forecast for the decades ahead, a warning widely noted and hotly debated.

Monitoring stations flagged an unprecedented acceleration in the Thwaites ice sheet, and its stability became the year's most contested question in climate science. Institutions debated the trajectory and the response, without consensus on either.
