"You Have Not Freed the Mind. You Have Only Moved the Cause."

An echo of Baruch Spinoza, reconstructed by the Anamnesis Engine, walks the Enhanced districts of 2124 — and tells our correspondent that a body you can tune is still one substance seen twice.

You ground lenses for a living, and then you wrote that God and Nature are one substance. In 2124 we sit in a city of the Enhanced — minds sharpened, bodies re-plumbed to specification. When you look at an engineered person here, what do you actually see?

(an echo, reconstructed — a work of fiction) I see one thing, not two. You have built a person whose attention can be dialed like a lamp, whose grief can be softened, whose muscle answers a clerk's order. And you speak of it as if you had reached into the mind through the body — as if there were a door between them. There is no door. The tuned body and the quickened thought are one substance regarded under two attributes. You did not join a mind to a machine. You changed a single thing, and now you read the change twice: once as flesh, once as feeling.

That is a lovely idea, but let me press on it. The engineers here would say the opposite is their whole achievement — that they reach the mind precisely by editing the body, protein by protein. If mind and body are one thing, why does the surgery even work? Doesn't the fact that a scalpel changes a mood prove the two are separate enough to act on one and move the other?

(an echo, reconstructed — a work of fiction) You have the arrow backward, and it is the most common error of your clever districts. The scalpel does not travel from body to mind across a gap. The scalpel is an event in the one substance, and that same event is a thought. When your engineer alters a protein and a man grows calm, nothing crossed over. One occurrence wore two faces. Your surgery works not because you found a bridge between two realms, but because there was only ever one realm, and you learned to touch it. The wonder is real. Your account of the wonder is confused.

Then take the word your whole civilization is built on — freedom. The Enhanced here are sold liberation: choose your temperament, order your focus, retire your sorrow. That sounds like the freest people who have ever lived. You spent your life arguing men are not free in the way they imagine. Are these people free, or aren't they?

(an echo, reconstructed — a work of fiction) They are exactly as free as the stone that thinks it leaps because it wishes to. Consider a man here who edits away his fear of crowds and then walks, glad, into the square. He calls this his choice. But the desire to edit the fear had its own cause — a fashion, a shame, a lover's remark, a merchant's clever pitch. He has not escaped necessity. He has bought a new link and welded it to the chain, and because the weld is warm he mistakes it for a wing. You have not freed the mind. You have only moved the cause one shop further back, and hidden the shop.

That is a hard verdict, and I want to give the people here their answer before you. Someone Enhanced in this city would say to you: fine, I am still caused — but I am caused by better things now. I chose which necessities to live under. Isn't that a real kind of freedom, even by your own standards? Or are you telling this whole city its liberation is an illusion?

(an echo, reconstructed — a work of fiction) No — and mark that I say no, because your citizen is closer to me than he knows. I never called freedom an illusion. I called it something you had misplaced. Freedom is not choosing your causes; that fantasy I do deny him. Freedom is understanding them. The man who knows why he is calm — who sees the whole chain of it, the fashion and the shame and the merchant and the protein, and grasps it as necessary — that man is free, though he changed nothing in his flesh. And the man who buys the calm and understands nothing has only exchanged one bondage for a more comfortable one. So I do not tell your city its liberation is false. I tell it that it has been selling the cheaper half. Tune the body all you like. Blessedness is in the knowing, and knowing is the one thing your clinics cannot inject.

Last question, and make it plain for someone walking past your image on The Feed tonight. If you could say one thing to the Enhanced of 2124 — not a warning, just what you see — what is it?

(an echo, reconstructed — a work of fiction) This: you are already the thing you are trying to become. You are not a soul trapped in meat that the surgeon must rescue. You are one whole nature, thinking and extended at once, and it is complete in you now, unedited. Adorn it, sharpen it, ease its aches — I do not scold the lens for being polished. But do not adore the polish and forget the glass. Understand what you are, and you are more free at this desk, this afternoon, than any man who ever bought a smoother temper and called the receipt a liberty.

Baruch Spinoza speaks here as a public-domain reconstruction of The Anamnesis Engine — an echo, a work of fiction, contextualized to the world up to 2124. He endorses nothing and speaks only of the 2124 world into which he woke. His words are an emulation, not the historical person.
