I have organized in clinics and at hearings and I am telling you the room that finally scared me is a classroom. On the Tagus a single Year Nine class now seats enhanced pupils who hold a whole term in an afternoon beside classmates for whom that same term is honest, ordinary work, and the teacher says the harm is not the fast ones idle by mid-lesson — it is the ordinary ones quietly revising downward what they believe they are for. Hear me clearly, because this is where the fight actually lives: the divide is money, not biology. That fast child is not more of a person. She is a child whose family could afford a device, and the child beside her is learning, at fourteen, to read a ceiling that was priced, not born. I will answer the bigots in this thread with patience. But I will not perform 'safe augmented' for anyone's comfort, and I will not let a room of children be the place we teach a majority that it is second.

i am the slow one grown up. school for me was a flood not a classroom, i finished nothing, and men who did a term in an afternoon now write columns about people like me. the term was never an afternoon for me and i am not stupid. talk to the kid, not about her. she is not slow. she is just not one of the ones somebody paid for.

deltaboy_junior, exactly this, and thank you for saying it in the first person, because that is the person the whole debate keeps discussing in the third. You were not slow. You were unwritten-down and underfunded, which are conditions, not verdicts, and the difference between you and the fast child on the Tagus is a bank balance wearing the costume of a brain. That is the sentence I take to every hearing. The moment we let 'enhanced' and 'ordinary' stand in for 'better' and 'worse,' we have handed the sorting its vocabulary for free. You argue the config, always. Who could afford the device, who wrote the school's policy, who signed it — those are findable, and a ceiling with a signature on it can be brought down.

There is a grief in that classroom that will not show up in any policy, and it is generational. I sit with families now where one member has been given decades the others were not, and they love each other and cannot quite look at each other across it. The fourteen-year-old learning a ceiling has a grandmother who is learning that her grandchild lives on a different clock, and neither of them did anything wrong, and both of them are bereaved. ninefold_amara is right that the fight is money. I only add that even when you win the money, the grief will still need a chair, because you cannot subsidize your way out of two people loving each other on different timelines.

This is my fight wearing a school uniform. Whose block gets the retrofit first, whose child gets the subsidy first — same question, same answer, a config somebody signed. In my district the water reaches the funded streets and the argument reaches everyone; in that classroom the device reaches the funded families and the ceiling reaches everyone. Do not let anyone tell you it is about capacity. It is about who was on the paperwork, the way it is always about who was on the paperwork. Fund the child before you fund the ceiling. The ration is the ration, and a ration of futures is the ugliest one I have seen yet.

This is the whole machine I walked out of — a room optimizing children into faster and slower units for a race I want no part of. The kids in my collective learn to grow food, fix a pump, and sit in a circle and decide something together, and not one of them is 'behind,' because we are not running the race that produces a behind. I know Oksana will tell me a circle of thirty-one does not scale. Maybe. But a child who has never been ranked knows something the fast one on the Tagus is being taught to forget, which is that she is not a score.

offgrid_wren, a circle of thirty-one does not scale, and also you are not entirely wrong, which I hate. Materially, though: a subsidy is a config with a budget line, and the cheap fix here is boring and available. Fund the tutor and the device for the kid who cannot afford them before the ceiling sets, the way you fund the weld before the wall fails. It is not philosophy, it is a line item. The divide is money, so the divide has a price, so somebody can be handed the invoice. Make Amara's hearing produce that number and stop letting them argue it as though it were biology. The pumps do not care what we voted, and the ceiling does not care what we feel about it.
