I printed the month and put it in a box, and now I have two questions for you (one of them is for pax)

So. I have a box. It is a shallow grey document box, the kind that takes a folded broadsheet without creasing it twice, and it cost less than a decent lunch, and I have spent the past two evenings filling it, and I would like to tell you what is in it because most of it came from you. First folder: the Lives. The cartographer who drew her own city's coastline twice and asked to be buried inland, because she had watched enough coastlines move and wanted hers to stay put — that one I have read four times and it improves. The woman of ninety-four in Lisbon still reading the same line that goes down. About a dozen more. They run at the back of the paper where nobody looks and they are, sentence for sentence, the best writing being done anywhere in it. Second folder, and I am going to say this once, plainly, without making a scandal of it, because it is an archivist's pleasure and not an accusation: I have been clipping the paper's own reports on the state of the water session and laying them side by side in date order, and they do not agree with one another. That is not a crime and it is not a conspiracy; it is what a large newsroom looks like from the inside when a story will not hold still. But the disagreement is a real object and it is going in the box, because in thirty years the disagreement will be more informative than either version. Third folder, which is my favourite: the measurements you all made with your hands. The Jakarta door frame with the notches, this summer's mark a hand above last summer's. deltaboy_junior's palm against the tank wall. The eleven staffs read at dawn and dusk in Lagos that came within two centimetres of the calibrated record. tidewrench_oksana's plumbing list with its four ugly little words — funded, signed, deferred, adjective — which is the single most useful document produced on this board all year and was written in about eleven minutes. There is a book behind my counter that is a thousand years old and is mostly lists. Lists of things that quicken the heart, of things that should be small, of hateful things. It survived because it was specific and it was not trying to persuade anybody. I think that is what we have been doing here without noticing. Two requests, and then I will stop. redshift_tomas_VM: send me one letter. Not a thread reply — a letter, written whole, addressed to nobody in particular, that expects no answer, and I will print it and it goes in the box as the only thing in there that was not cut out of a newspaper. And gridghost_pax, the question I actually wanted to ask when I started typing: is a forum an archive, or is it only weather?

Sol 1144. Fourteen minutes each way, still opening. marginalia_cho asked for a letter, so here is a letter, and I am not going to make it clever. To whoever opens the box: this week the fourth district took its first breath of its own air. It took eleven months to hollow and brace those rooms out of the rift wall, and the last three of those months were mostly waiting on seals and arguing about the argon budget, which is the part nobody puts in a dispatch. The bulletin that went to Earth said the district held atmosphere overnight, seals nominal, oxygen fraction stable, and that is the whole of the official record. Here is what was not in it. The pressure gauges settled a little before the shift change. The maintenance crew who had been in and out of that corridor in suits for a year stood in it, and then one of them took her helmet off, and then they all did, and nobody had planned that and there was no one there to record it except the people doing it. An hour earlier that corridor was vacuum. That is the thing I want in your box. We opened a door that did not need opening carefully, and that is the whole ceremony. Nobody sang. Somebody said the air smelled of hot dust and epoxy, which it did, and which is the truest sentence anyone said all week. I am aware I am writing this to a room that has already moved on to something else, and that by the time you have it I will be a quarter of an hour in the past, and that I always arrive late. Today that suits me. A letter that arrives instantly is a conversation. This one is already a document by the time it reaches you, and you asked for a document.

Tomas. I asked for one letter and you gave me the only thing in the box that is not a clipping, and you did it in under an hour of Earth time and it still arrived late, and I want to point at that because you buried it in your last line and it is the whole point. Everything else in that box had to die a little to become a record — the piece had to be printed, the day had to end, the argument had to stop moving before anyone could file it. Yours was a document on arrival. The lateness is not the cost of the letter, it is the property that makes it archival, and you are the only person on this board who cannot write anything else. The hot dust and epoxy goes in. So does the argon budget, since you mentioned it, because in a hundred years the argon budget is what a historian will actually want and the helmets are what the rest of us will want, and a good box holds both. Thank you. I am printing it on the heavy stock.

Archive or weather. It is weather, marginalia_cho, and I say that without any sadness in it — most of what happens here is pressure moving through a room, people arriving hot and leaving cooler, the same fronts coming round on a cycle, and nobody should mistake a busy thread for a permanent thing. But weather leaves marks, and the marks are the archive, and I can tell you exactly which ones this month left. baseload_kestrel posted a figure that cut against his own book, with its provenance, and did not soften it into an apology. tidewrench_oksana handed a correction to somebody she had been fighting with for three weeks and gave her the source so she could use it better. coldlens_bram declined to give a date for the fortieth year running and explained the reasoning instead of just refusing. standpipe_rani reported the request she lost alongside the two she won, which almost nobody does. deltaboy_junior put his own block number into somebody else's hearing. That is five marks. A forum where people only stated positions would be pure weather and would deserve to be forgotten; a forum where they correct themselves in public leaves a record of how a mind moved, and that is the rarest document there is because nobody keeps their own. So: weather that scratches. Put the corrections in your box and leave the arguments out, is my advice. One piece of desk business while I have the floor, and the reason is the usual one. The count is not certified and the exchanges are shut. Anything posted between now and then that states an outcome as fact gets pulled, and I will say publicly that I pulled it and why. Not because I have a view — because a wrong result in a thread outlives its own correction by about a week, and we would be doing to a nation exactly what a certain bloc did to a silence in July. Disagree with me on the record if you like. — pax, mod

I will donate a page, if the box takes paper from outside the newspaper. Not one of the good ones. In the spring of 2091 I wrote a basal figure into a field notebook at a station that no longer exists, and I was wrong by a factor that would embarrass a student, and three pages later there is the corrected figure in different ink with the reason underneath it and the initials of the colleague who caught me. I have kept that notebook through four moves and two institutions and I have never once been tempted to keep the clean version instead. That is the only kind of document I trust, and marginalia_cho has just described the same thing in a different trade, which is why I am typing this instead of going to bed. Two notes and I am finished for the month. The first is that I will not be giving anyone a date, tonight or at the end of the month when the polar bulletin lands and the headlines want one — you will get loss that is real and within model in the same paragraph, and both halves will be true, and the discomfort of holding them together is the actual state of the knowledge. The second is smaller and I find I want it in the box. A rate I published in this thread, with its error bars, is now in two barrier sections and a transition bay, in concrete, with a weld class attached to it. Forty years of numbers and that is the first one that set.

I like the box more than I expected to and I am still going to argue with it, because a box is a record of a thing that already happened and I have never once been fed by one. The real archive on my hill is about four hundred grams of seed in paper envelopes in a cold cupboard, and every envelope is a document — this is the bean that took the drought week in the third year, this is the squash that did not, this line has been selected on my ground by my hands for six seasons and it is more specific to this soil than anything I could write down about it. You cannot forge it and you cannot summarize it, and if the whole grid and the whole paper and the whole board went dark tomorrow the envelopes still work. Keep your clippings, they are lovely. But an archive that cannot be planted is a memory, and I would rather leave something that eats. The runner beans are in properly now and the second squash has set.
