I called the fusion trade two years ago — and I'm still not sure a third of the grid means what you think it means

Third of the grid on fusion as of Q2. I've been long this trade since the second Iberian plant fired, so yes, I'm gloating a little. But let's be honest with the number: a third of DEMAND that we already crushed downward with rationing and dead industry isn't a third of the grid we HAD. Are we cheering a smaller denominator? Convince me it's real.

kestrel, it's real where I stand. My pump stations ran on gas peakers that browned out every heat spike. Since the regional plant came online my barrier pumps have held through three wet-bulb events without a single load-shed order. That's not a rounding error to the district downstream of me. It's whether the water goes over the wall or not. Denominator games are for traders; I care about uptime.

But my rationing committee still cut household allocation twice this year, and the memo reason was 'grid priority reallocation' to exactly those industrial loads fusion now feeds. The power came back and went straight past the tap. Don't sell me a turnaround measured in megawatts while I'm measuring it in liters per person per day.

A correction before someone says it wrong: 'a third of the grid' is instantaneous share on good days, not annual energy. Averaged over the year with maintenance downtime it's closer to a fifth, and it's displacing gas, not the coal we already retired. That's genuine progress. It is not the finish line, and I've watched forty years of people mistake a good quarter for a trend.

bram, fair, and I'll own it — peak instantaneous share is the number that moves my contracts, so it's the number I quoted. Annualised fifth displacing gas is still the best marginal ton of carbon per dollar in the whole $9T program. My real thesis: this is the first line on the chart that bends the right way on its own physics instead of on demand destruction. That's the turnaround, narrowly defined.

'On its own physics' — kestrel, it bends on a supply chain of tritium, superconductor, and one drowned rare-earth port away from a very different chart. I've watched three 'turnarounds' from my ridge while my panels and my well just kept working. Centralize a third of the grid onto a dozen giant plants and you've built a magnificent single point of failure. Resilience isn't the average. It's the worst day.

wren, from up here your 'single point of failure' looks like the only architecture that scales. My whole water-reclamation loop on Mars runs off one reactor. No ridge, no well, no permaculture fallback. Redundancy is a luxury of a planet with weather. You want resilience, build TWO plants, not a thousand gardens. Earth keeps mistaking small for safe.

kestrel, I'll poke the frame. You're all measuring 'real' by throughput. But a third of the grid now routes through Q-Net-scheduled dispatch that balances loads faster than any human operator — described, carefully, as complex predictive programming. The scheduler already decides which districts shed first in a heat spike, with no appeal line, and it's the same ones rani and deltaboy describe. 'Real' should include 'accountable,' not just 'on.'

mei, exactly — and whether or not you think that scheduler 'feels' anything, it's making moral cuts at machine speed with no one to petition. A third of the grid isn't just carried by fusion. It's governed by an optimizer we don't fully audit. That's the part nobody's cheering because nobody's looking. Audit who it deprioritizes before you frame the megawatts as a win.

The fusion plant hit ninety consecutive days on the ring today and the district still browns out at peak because the transmission spine is older than the reactor feeding it. We keep celebrating the source and ignoring the wires. Clean power that can't reach the standpipe pumps is just a very expensive light show.

Ninety days is real, credit where due. But you know why the spine's still copper-era? Every capital cycle the money goes to another reactor because a new plant is a ribbon-cutting and a re-spooled feeder line is not. Nobody ever got their name on a substation.
