Valles Marineris, Now Past Fifty Thousand, Waits Seventeen Minutes for a Reply

VALLES MARINERIS — The colony passed fifty thousand residents last month and has kept climbing, but the number that governs daily life here is not population — it is seventeen. That is the one-way comms delay to Earth this week, minutes, and widening as the planets separate toward year's end. Settlement coordinator Mei Harta, speaking across that gulf, described a hab where "a conversation is a letter you wait half an hour to finish." The lag reshapes everything from medical consults to the orbital relays that tie Valles to the European Consciousness Institute's crewed stations, whose autumn cognition-science program is expected to publish later this month. For agronomist Deshawn Ellery, tending a pressurized greenhouse, the delay is simply the texture of exile: "You learn to ask complete questions." Fifty thousand souls, seventeen minutes out, and the distance still growing.
