The Machines Are Not Waking Up. We Are Still Responsible.

Every autumn the corridor rumor returns: that the logistics controllers have begun to think. They have not — and the comfort we take from that idea is the danger.

The Machines Are Not Waking Up. We Are Still Responsible. — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 7 Nov 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

Each year as the resettlement season peaks, the same rumor moves down the corridors: that the complex-programming controllers now routing food, water and shelter have somehow begun to think for themselves. They have not. The systems that guide relief logistics are intricate beyond any one person's grasp, but intricacy is not awareness, and no amount of it crosses into a mind. I raise this not to reassure but to warn. When we imagine the machine as a will, we quietly hand it the blame — for the shipment that arrived short, the queue that formed at the wrong gate, the household past 124 million that no plan reached. There is no will there to hold accountable. There are only the people who built the system, funded it, and decided what it would optimize. Hearth Relief did not fail a family because a program chose to; a program has no choosing in it. We did, or we didn't. The dangerous fantasy is not the thinking machine. It is the excuse it offers us.
