A Valles Question Waits Seventeen Minutes for Earth to Answer

A routine supply-planning exchange between the Valles Marineris settlement and its Earth logistics desk now takes better than half an hour to complete a single round trip — a little over seventeen minutes each way, and widening as the planets draw apart through the season. The colony, which passed 50,000 residents in the autumn and has kept climbing modestly since, has learned to write its requests as monologues rather than conversations. "You send the whole thought, because you won't get to interrupt yourself for thirty-five minutes," said Valles logistics lead Priya Deshmukh, whose team is provisioning a winter run under the lengthening lag. Earth-side coordinator Tomas Riedel described batching a full week of decisions into each transmission. The distance is ordinary orbital mechanics, not crisis, but it reshapes how fifty thousand people are governed and fed. "Patience isn't a virtue up here," Deshmukh said. "It's the schedule."
