Valles Marineris Learns to Live With the Widening Silence

As Earth and Mars separate, a seventeen-minute lag reshapes how fifty thousand colonists talk home.

VALLES MARINERIS — The delay is up to roughly seventeen minutes each way now, and the colony of some fifty thousand has stopped fighting it. A message sent to Earth at breakfast is answered by lunch, and the settlement — which passed the fifty-thousand mark in late September — has rebuilt its habits around the gulf. Habitat physician Dr. Rowan Achebe describes a culture of "complete letters," long recorded messages that assume no interruption, because interruption costs half an hour. "You learn to say everything at once," Achebe said. "It makes people more careful, and stranger, and kinder." The one-way lag has widened month by month as the planets draw apart and will keep widening toward year's end. Mission logisticians treat it as weather, not fault: nothing is broken, the sky is simply longer. "We don't wait for the answer anymore," one relay operator said. "We just keep talking into the distance and trust it lands."
