Singapore's Q-Net Upgrade Goes Live, and the Privacy War Reopens on Schedule

Unbreakable lines harden the network; civil-liberty groups ask who is protected and who is watched.

Singapore's Q-Net Upgrade Goes Live, and the Privacy War Reopens on Schedule — The Lost Archive, 2124

SINGAPORE — The upgrade went live a little after midnight, and by breakfast the argument it always reopens was already back in the newsfeeds, as punctual as the tide. The Singapore Institute — fresh from demonstrating a million-qubit processor over the backbone in September — switched a hardened new layer of the Q-Net into service this week, extending quantum-secured, mathematically unbreakable channels to a broader swath of the city-state's civic and financial traffic. The engineering is not in dispute: what the Q-Net encrypts, no one uncrypts. The politics never settle. Within hours, civil-liberty coalitions were pressing the question the technology cannot answer for itself — a line no one can read is a shield for the citizen and a shield for whoever watches the citizen, and the same unbreakable channel that protects a dissident's message protects the surveillance ordered against her. "Perfect secrecy is perfectly neutral," an Institute spokesperson said, which is exactly what worries the coalitions. The upgrade hardens the pipe. Who stands at either end of it is a matter, they insist, that no amount of qubits will decide. The war reopens, as scheduled.
