Aurora's Baseload Holds the Winter Grid at Thirty Percent

Three months after its new reactor synced, the fusion operator says the season's real test is steadiness, not headlines.

GENEVA — Aurora Fusion Works reported this week that its reconnected grid is holding fusion at roughly 30 percent of supply through the first cold snap, with the baseload reactor synced the previous Friday in August still running at rated output. Chief executive Emeka Okonkwo told a briefing at the Alpine Geneva Polytechnic that the number the company watches is not peak share but uptime: "A grid that swings from thirty to twelve overnight is worse than one that never left twenty." Engineers said the reactor absorbed a Tuesday demand spike as heating loads climbed across northern cities without shedding a single district. The claim is narrower than it sounds. Fusion still leans on stored and renewable supply for the daily curve, and Aurora concedes that a hard freeze across three time zones at once would stretch reserves. For a plant operator named Lena Vasquez, watching dials in a control room outside Geneva, the milestone is quieter: "It held. That's the whole job."
