In Lagos, a Choir Rehearses for an Audience It Cannot Hear

A community ensemble prepares songs meant for relay to Mars, across a silence no signal can close.

At a community center in Lagos on Sunday, thirty-eight singers rehearsed a program they will never watch land. The pieces are being recorded for relay to the Valles Marineris settlement, whose fifty thousand residents receive Earth's dispatches a quarter-hour late and answer, when they answer, a quarter-hour after that. "You sing into a delay," said the choir's director, Folake Adebayo, laughing at the strangeness of it. "By the time they clap, we are asleep." The recording is part of a growing practice — Earth cultural groups making work explicitly for the colony, accepting that the eighteen-minute gulf makes real-time performance impossible. What returns, weeks later, is a Martian recording of the settlers listening: faces in a pressurized hall, a rift wall behind them, applause no microphone on Earth will hear live. Adebayo keeps the last one pinned above her piano. "It is the strangest audience in the world," she said. "It is also, I think, the most grateful."
