Valles Marineris Seals Its Fourth District, and the Twelve-Minute Silence Holds
The rift settlement passes fifty thousand as another airlock cycles shut against the cold.

The dispatch arrived this morning after its usual passage across the gulf — a little over twelve minutes each way this week — carrying word that the Valles Marineris settlement had pressurized and sealed its fourth district, formally crossing a threshold the colony had passed in population weeks earlier. More than fifty thousand people now live strung along the rift, and the fourth district's completion gives them room the colony has needed since its greenhouses outgrew their walls. The report described, with the flat precision Martian administrators favor, an airlock cycling shut for the last time on open construction, sealing warmth against a canyon night that runs to a hundred below. There is no drama in it, the dispatch insisted, and then rather undercut itself: "Fifty thousand people are asleep tonight behind doors that hold. We did that with our hands, on a world that wants us dead. We are allowed to find it remarkable." Earth read the words a quarter-hour after they were written, as it always does, and across a gulf no message can shorten.
