Q-Net Adds a Node, and Latency, Not Speed, Is the Prize

A new backbone relay through Lagos secures more channels — without pretending entanglement carries a single word.

Quanta Lattice Systems switched on a new Q-Net relay in Lagos this week, extending the quantum-key-distribution backbone to a corridor that had leaned on classical encryption alone. The upgrade secures roughly forty new institutional channels, the firm said, from hospital records to grid-control links. Dr. Wei-Lin Tan of the Singapore Institute, whose team demonstrated a million-qubit processor over the same backbone in September, was careful about what the milestone is not. "People hear 'quantum' and imagine instant messages across the planet," Tan said. "Entanglement locks the channel; it does not shorten it. A packet from Lagos to Singapore still travels at the old, honest speed of light." What the node buys, engineers at Pacific Rim University noted, is not haste but trust: a line that cannot be quietly read. For a city wiring critical services onto one grid, that unglamorous guarantee, Tan said, "is worth more than any magic would be."
