Past 124 Million, the Ledger Adds a Name in Jakarta
As the migrant count climbs through 124 million, relief workers insist each entry is a person, not a statistic.

The registered climate-migrant count has climbed past 124 million this autumn, Hearth Relief International confirmed, and at a Passage Trust intake tent on the drying edge of Jakarta the newest entry was written by hand before it was ever typed. Aminah Suryadi, 61, crossed from a flooded-then-parched delta district with two grandchildren and a plastic folder of documents. "They asked my name three times, gently," she said. "I understood — they did not want to lose it." Passage Trust field coordinator Budi Hartono said his corridor processed nearly 400 arrivals that day, part of a pace the agency calls the steepest of the year. "The number rises whether or not we watch it," Hartono said. "Our job is to make sure it never rises anonymously." The corridor's shelter capacity, he added, was rated for 300.
