The Cooling Load Falls, and the Grid Exhales for the First Time Since June

Fusion's third of the load looks generous in November — the arithmetic that flatters autumn will not flatter December.

The Cooling Load Falls, and the Grid Exhales for the First Time Since June — The Lost Archive, 2124

For the first weekend since early summer, the grid operators in three continents watched their demand curves sag instead of spike, and let themselves, briefly, enjoy it. As the cooling season closes across the warm belt, the vast draw of air-handling and heat-shedding that had pinned the network near its ceiling since June has finally slackened. Fusion, holding a shade under a third of global generation, suddenly looks abundant against a load it no longer has to chase. Control-room screens that spent the summer flashing amber ran a placid blue. "You can hear the plant relax," said a shift supervisor at an Aurora Fusion Works interlink node outside Madrid, watching the reserve margin widen like a held breath released. But the operators are not sentimentalists, and none of them mistook the reprieve for a gift. The same reactors that comfortably carry a mild November must, in eight weeks, carry a temperate-north winter that turns every eased kilowatt back into a demanded one. Autumn flatters the arithmetic. Nobody in the room believes it will last. "Enjoy the slack," the supervisor said. "We're only ever renting it."
