The songs that moved along the migration corridors through the hot months — carried from standpipe to shelter by families who owned little else portable — are being gathered this autumn into the concert halls of the temperate cities that mostly watched the heat from a distance. A community-hall program in Jakarta this week paired corridor musicians with local players, and the room, an organizer said, learned something a headline had not taught it. "You read that 124 million people are on the move and it is a number," he said. "You hear one of them sing about the last well in her village and it is a person." Mateo Solis reports that the corridor-song gatherings, seeded by Hearth Relief International's cultural workers, have spread to a dozen cities as the cooler season opens indoor venues. The music does not solve the winter's arithmetic. But it does what statistics cannot: it gives the season past a voice, and the voice a face, and the face a name the audience carries home.
