In the Sahel, the First Cool Mornings Feel Like a Held Breath — The Lost Archive, 2124

SAHEL CORRIDOR — The first genuinely cool morning came this week, and the standpipe queue in the settlement was shorter than it had been since April — not because the water is cheaper, but because in cooler air a family needs less of it, and the arithmetic of thirst finally bends the right way. There is a particular quality to relief that arrives after a season of dread, the residents say: not celebration, but the long exhale of a breath held too long to remember drawing. The corridor delivered through the worst of it. The Sahel line ran when the temperate world was watching Karachi, and it kept a stretch of settlements watered through months that would once have emptied them. Now the mornings cool, the queues shorten, and the questions that heat crowded out have room again: what the winter power negotiation will do to the price, whether the rights-floor idea moving through the corridor legislatures will reach here, whether next summer starts from a better place or the same one. "We got through," said a standpipe attendant, coiling a hose in the gray dawn. "Now we have time to worry properly." On the corridor, that is what a good season looks like — the luxury of worrying about the next one.
