On Mars, a Month of Silence Measured in Seventeen-Minute Halves

With the planets still drifting apart, Valles Marineris ends October speaking to Earth across a widening gap of roughly eighteen minutes each way.

The colony passed fifty thousand residents a month ago; what it cannot pass is the distance. As October closes, a one-way message from Valles Marineris to Earth takes roughly eighteen minutes, a gulf that has widened steadily since summer as the two planets separate, said settlement communications lead Idris Nakasone — no relation to this desk's correspondent, a coincidence the colony finds funnier than Earth does. For the colony's new arrivals, the delay is the first real lesson in Martian life: no conversation, only correspondence. "You learn to say the whole thing," said medic Priya Sundaram, who arrived in September and has stopped expecting replies. "You stop leaving room for an answer that can't come for half an hour." Habitat systems reported a nominal month, water reclamation steady, the population holding near fifty thousand. The gap will keep widening toward year's end. On Mars, patience is not a virtue. It is a unit of measurement.
