Desalination's Power Draw Is Rewriting the Grid's Night Shift

Every liter pulled from the sea is also a demand on the fusion baseload, and this month the two bills are climbing together.

GENEVA — The water crossing the Makran corridor arrives desalinated, and desalination is, before it is anything else, an electricity problem. As delivered water costs have climbed through October, so has the load the plants place on a grid that fusion now supplies at roughly 30 percent, said Emeka Okonkwo, chief executive of Aurora Fusion Works, in a briefing here. "People picture a water crisis and an energy crisis as two rooms," Okonkwo said. "They share a wall, and the wall is the desalination plant." Aurora's baseload reactors, he noted, have been running desalination demand deep into the overnight hours once reserved for grid rest, a pattern engineers at the Alpine Geneva Polytechnic confirm across three water-stressed megacities. The physics is unforgiving: pushing seawater through a membrane costs the same joules whether the household paying for the output is Rashida Bhatti's in Makran or a coastal tower in Karachi. What the corridor experiences as a water bill, the grid experiences as a demand curve that no longer sleeps.
