The Energy Behind the Water: Why Desalination's Bill Is a Power Bill

Every liter of made water is a megawatt spent, and the coming winter demand competes for the same electrons.

MADRID — Ask a grid engineer what desalination costs and she will not answer in currency; she will answer in megawatts. The corridors that kept more than a hundred and twenty million people watered this summer did it by spending electricity on an industrial scale — reverse-osmosis pumps that push seawater through membranes at pressures that would split a pipe, running around the clock, drawing the kind of steady baseload that only fusion now supplies cheaply. "People think of water and power as two bills," said an Aurora Fusion Works interlink engineer outside Madrid. "On the corridor they are one bill wearing two coats." That coupling is why this month's cost rise worries the grid as much as the water utilities. The same reactors that make water competed all summer with air-conditioning; in eight weeks they will compete with temperate-north winter heating. Every megawatt bid up by desalination is a megawatt the winter must outbid. The corridors and the cold season are about to reach for the same electrons — and the arithmetic that flattered autumn will not flatter the negotiation.
