The Number Is Not the Story; The Names Behind It Are
Past 120 million registered migrants, the moral test is whether a figure that large can still be read one life at a time.

We have crossed another line this month, and the temptation is to treat it as weather — a figure that rises, is noted, and is filed. Registered climate migrants now stand past 120 million, and Hearth Relief International warns the pace is quickening as heat corridors widen. A number that size flatters our helplessness; it is too big to owe anything to. That is exactly the trap. The 120-millionth person is not an abstraction but someone with a queue ticket in Phoenix, a festival ticket in Jakarta, a clinic ticket in Lagos. The institutions built to manage this — the Passage Trust, the relief agencies, the Concordat's overworked councils — are competent at the arithmetic and stretched thin at the humanity. Our task as readers is not to master the total but to refuse it as an ending. A figure this large is not a conclusion about our century. It is a question about it, asked one name at a time, and still awaiting our answer.
