The Arithmetic Flips: Can the Fusion Build-Out Beat the Cold Season

Autumn light, winter worry — the paper walks the numbers on whether the reconnected grid keeps pace with the heat everyone will soon demand.

The Arithmetic Flips: Can the Fusion Build-Out Beat the Cold Season — The Lost Archive, 2124

For six months the grid's whole problem was shedding heat. This week it became the opposite sum, and the answer is genuinely uncertain. Across the temperate north the heating-demand curve is now climbing hard, and the question the dispatchers have carried since the arithmetic first bent is coming due: can the fusion build-out add warm-current capacity faster than the cold season adds demand? The numbers are close enough to be a real race. Fusion baseload sits near a third of the reconnected grid and is still growing — Aurora Fusion Works brought a reactor online in August, and more capacity is scheduled before deep winter. But baseload is only half the equation; the other half is delivery, the interlinks that spent all summer shipping cooling power south and must now reverse to run warm current north. "Generation is winning. Delivery is a coin toss," said grid analyst Tomas Varga, mapping scheduled capacity against the demand curve. "In the regions the rebuild reached, we probably beat the cold. In the regions it didn't, the cold beats us, the way it always has." The build-out is fast. Winter is faster in some places than others. The map, as ever, decides.
