From Valles Marineris, a Colony of Fifty Thousand Settles In

VALLES MARINERIS (via orbital relay) — With Earth and Mars pulling apart on their orbits, this dispatch reached the newsroom after a one-way delay of about seventeen minutes, and it carried an unremarkable, telling detail: the colony that passed 50,000 residents last month is now busy with the dull work of staying. Settlement administrator Dana Ferreira reported that the month's priority was not expansion but repair, sealing dust-worn locks and rotating hydroponics. "Fifty thousand people is not a milestone up here, it is a maintenance schedule," she said across the delay. The gulf itself is the story's frame: at about seventeen minutes each way and widening toward eighteen by year's end, every exchange is a letter, not a conversation. The colony marked no ceremony. It logged its numbers, patched its seals, and sent word home the only way it can — slowly, and on time.
