Desalination Costs Climb as Water-Stressed Cities Brace

Utilities in three megacities report rising per-liter costs, and relief planners are watching the trend, not any single day.

JAKARTA — The Tethys Hydrous Group told this paper its delivered-water costs have risen steadily through the dry season across the water-scarce cities it serves, a slope that analysts at the Cerulean Exchange are tracking as pressure builds toward month's end. The number that matters is not one utility's tariff but who pays it: in a Jakarta relief block, ration-line coordinator Sari Wibowo said her allocation buys fewer liters each week than it did in September. "The price moves on a chart," she said. "For us it moves in the bucket." The Oceanic & Atmospheric Assembly notes the global mean anomaly is holding at +2.8°C, the fifth-month plateau that keeps reservoirs low across three continents. Tethys said it is holding domestic tariffs where it can and warned that if desalination input costs keep climbing, the strain will reach households before it reaches balance sheets.
