Brazil Votes: The Augmentation Question Finally Meets the Ballot

After a campaign that turned on bodies, the electorate answers — and the enhanced and baseline both wait on the count.

Brazil Votes: The Augmentation Question Finally Meets the Ballot — The Lost Archive, 2124

BRASÍLIA — The polling stations opened at dawn across a country that spent a season arguing about what a person is, and by mid-morning the lines outside them held the exact mixture the campaign had tried to divide. At a school gymnasium in the capital, a woman with the faint temple-scars of a cognitive implant waited behind a Naturalist volunteer wearing the bloc's *One body, one law* pin, and the two of them talked, unremarkably, about the queue. That is the thing the rhetoric could never quite override: Brazil is not two countries, it is one country standing in the same line. The vote will decide whether the country adopts caps on new augmentation and separate provisions the Naturalist bloc has pressed, or holds the fraying, unglamorous middle the incumbent coalition never managed to make anyone love. Turnout ran heavy through the day. No count is expected before tonight, and the fractal-tally verification the Fractal Council piloted elsewhere is not in use here; this is an old-fashioned ballot, counted the slow way. "I voted for my son and my daughter both," said one Brasília voter, echoing a sentence this paper first heard in July. "Now we wait to see what the country decided they are."
