The Handspan Ledger: A Sahel Family Measures a Season in Liters Delivered

Named place, named face, water reported exactly as this month's meter read it — no more, no less.

The Handspan Ledger: A Sahel Family Measures a Season in Liters Delivered — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 22 Oct 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

TAHOUA — The Ould Amar family keeps its own ledger, and it is more honest than most. On a page tacked inside their shelter in a settlement outside Tahoua, in a hand that belongs to fourteen-year-old Fatima, the household's water arrives as a column of numbers: liters delivered, by day, since the corridor tap reached this stretch of the settlement in September. The paper reports this newspaper only what that column says. In the last thirty days the family of six received a metered average of eleven liters per person per day — above the emergency floor, below what the settled world spends without thinking, and exactly, to the liter, what the corridor delivered. "Before, we counted what we didn't have," said the mother, Halima Ould Amar, folding the page shut. "Now we count what comes. It is a better thing to count." The measure is not a projection and carries no forecast; it is a meter read, attributed to a named place and a named family, reported at the resolution at which it is true. Some months the column will be longer. This month it was eleven liters, and the ledger says so, and nothing more.
