The Number Is Not the Story; The Morning Is
We have learned to say "a hundred and twenty million" so smoothly that we no longer hear it.

There is a particular danger in a number that rises on schedule. Registered climate migration passed 120 million this month, up from 108 million in July, and we in this trade have grown fluent in reciting it — fluent enough that the figure now slides past the ear like a weather report. That fluency is a kind of forgetting. A statistic that behaves predictably begins to feel like scenery, and scenery does not demand anything of us. But I would ask readers to resist the smoothness. Behind the tidy monthly increment is a fact with no round edges: each of those twelve additional million since summer is a person who packed a bag they did not want to pack. The Passage Trust coordinator quoted elsewhere in this edition put it better than an editorial can — one hundred and twenty million individual mornings, each needing a door. Our job is not to make that easy to hear. Our job is to keep it hard.
