Water Utilities Rally as Traders Bet the Dry Season Runs Long
On the Cerulean Exchange, desalination stocks climbed while grain futures wobbled on a delayed monsoon.

Shares in water infrastructure moved sharply this week as commodity desks priced in a lengthening drought across South and Southeast Asia. On the Cerulean Exchange, the barometer of resource markets, desalination and water-rights names led gainers, with Tethys Hydrous Group among the most heavily traded on volumes twice its autumn average, exchange data showed. The move ran ahead of an anticipated Cerulean session later this month expected to log strain in desalination pricing. "Money is doing what money does — front-running a shortage," said Cerulean floor analyst Priyanka Rao, cautioning that a rally built on scarcity is "not a thing to celebrate; it is a thermometer." Grain futures moved the other way, softening on fears that a late Jakarta-region monsoon could crimp the coming harvest. Castellan Capital, which underwrites relief and water megaprojects, noted rising demand for drought-contingency financing. The market, as ever, was pricing the weather before the weather arrived.
