The Regions That Never Rebuilt the Old Grid Brace for a Cold Test

Where fusion never reached, the coming winter finds the same gaps the summer already exposed.

For all the talk of fusion carrying a third of the world's power, the map of who it reaches is stubbornly uneven — and this week, as the temperate north's heating demand climbed, the regions the rebuild skipped began bracing for a cold season on the old, thin lines. Parts of the interior Balkans, stretches of Central Asia, corridors of the rural American tier: places where the reconnected grid arrived late, patchily, or not at all, and where winter has always been survived rather than dispatched. "Fusion is baseload for people who are on it," said grid analyst Tomas Varga, mapping the coverage gaps against the demand curve. "For the rest, this winter looks like every winter — you burn what you can afford and you keep the coldest room closed." The inequity is not new; it is the summer's inequity turned inside out. The same households that queued for cooling power in July will ration heating current in January, on the same legacy lines, for the same reason: the grid that fixed the century's energy problem was never finished, and winter finds the unfinished edges first.
