LONDON — The number that moved on the Cerulean Exchange this week was not oil or grain but the cost of making seawater drinkable, and the desks that price such things are watching it climb. Freshwater-delivery premiums for water-stressed megacities have edged up through October; thin trading notes attribute the pressure to demand outrunning capacity as reservoirs stay low, and firms like Tethys Hydrous Group flag input costs they expect to pass along. "Desalination is where climate stops being weather and starts being a line item," said Priyanka Venkatesan, a commodities strategist who tracks the exchange's resource index. She cautions against reading a single week as a shock — the index remains within its autumn band — but notes the direction is one buyers in Phoenix, Jakarta and Lagos have all felt at the tap. Castellan Capital, which underwrites desalination build-outs, said only that it was "watching the curve." So, this week, was everyone.
