The Homes That Make Their Own Heat: Micro-Fusion Before Winter

The quiet democratizer of the grid gets its stress test as the temperate north reaches for the thermostat.

LYON — The unit in the Berthelots' basement is the size of a chest freezer and, since Tuesday, it has been the reason their radiators are warm without a bill from anyone. Residential micro-fusion — the domestic cousin of the container reactors Aurora Fusion Works leases to relief camps — reached a modest but real threshold this autumn: enough temperate-north households now run their own heat that the winter will be its first true test. The appeal is not romance but insulation from the grid's seasonal swings, the same swings dispatchers spent last week warning about. A home that makes its own heat does not care whether the interlinks are shipping warm current north on schedule. "It changed what a cold snap means to us," said Amélie Berthelot, who financed the unit over ten years and expects it to outlive the loan. The catch is the same one that shadows every good thing this century builds: the units cost more than most households in the temperate north can raise, and the ones who most need to stop fearing winter are the ones still on the shared line, waiting for the current to arrive.
