The Numbers Are Doing Our Feeling For Us

When a hundred twenty million becomes a headline figure, we should worry about what the figure lets us not see.

The Numbers Are Doing Our Feeling For Us — The Lost Archive, 2124

There is a mercy in a large number, and it is a dangerous one. When Hearth Relief International said this week that registered climate migrants had climbed past a hundred twenty million, the figure did its work: it was reported, absorbed, and set down. A number that large is a wall we lean against rather than a door we walk through. I do not blame the counters — the Oceanic & Atmospheric Assembly must count, the Passage Trust must tally — but I notice that the bigger the total grows, the less each person inside it seems to weigh. A hundred twenty million is not a crowd; it is a hundred twenty million times one. The +2.8°C that produced it is likewise a single tidy figure standing in for ten thousand ruined harvests. We have built instruments that feel on our behalf, and then mistaken the reading for the ache. The work of this century is to keep the door open behind the wall — to let the number stay a number without letting it become an excuse. Count them. Then look at one.
