How We Learned to Count the Displaced, and What the Counting Hides

The migrant tally that crossed 120 million this month is a modern instrument — and every instrument decides what it cannot see.

How We Learned to Count the Displaced, and What the Counting Hides — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 15 Oct 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

We speak of a hundred and twenty million registered climate migrants this autumn as if the number had always been countable. It has not. For most of human history the displaced were tallied, if at all, by the places they arrived, not the lives they left — and a person who moved twice, or died en route, or slipped past the ledger, simply did not exist to it. The registries that let Hearth Relief International and the Passage Trust speak of 120 million are barely a generation old, and they were built, like all instruments, to see some things and miss others. They count crossings, not reasons; the registered, not the vanished. This is not an argument against counting — a number is how twelve billion people hold one another in mind at all. It is a caution about mistaking the measure for the whole. The corridor is wider than the ledger. It always has been.
