Warmth Is Becoming a Thing You Can Be Engineered to Need Less Of

When the body itself can be tuned against the cold, heating a home stops being only an economic question and becomes a moral one.

Warmth Is Becoming a Thing You Can Be Engineered to Need Less Of — The Lost Archive, 2124

There is a quiet arithmetic in a +2.8°C world that the season is now forcing into view. As the temperate north prices in winter and heating demand climbs, the roughly five percent of humans carrying metabolic augmetics will feel the cold as a footnote, while their baseline neighbors ration warmth by the degree. I do not write this to cast the augmented as villains; almost none chose enhancement to dodge a heating bill, and to blame them is to miss the machine for the ghost. The problem is structural. We have built a century in which comfort, water, and now warmth can be purchased not only as a service but as a change to the body — available to those who can afford the change. A society can survive unequal thermostats. It is less clear it survives unequal biologies, sorted by price. The ministers meeting in Geneva over corridors and costs might spare a thought for the colder inequality forming inside the same borders they argue over.
