With the Vote Long Past, Augmented Workers Wait on a Review That Won't End

Two months after Brazil's ballot, the safety questions it raised remain open and contested.

LAGOS — The augmentation debate that Brazil's August vote was supposed to settle has instead settled nowhere, and the roughly five percent of humans living with neural or somatic augmentation are the ones holding the uncertainty. The safety review into Somaform Augmetics' neural-interface line remains open and contested this week, with regulators declining to clear it and declining to condemn it. Founder Julian Morrow, an augmentation-rights advocate, argues the prolonged review itself stigmatizes his users; independent clinicians counter that an unfinished review is exactly what an honest one looks like. Caught between them are people like Lagos logistics coordinator Folake Adebayo, augmented four years ago, who says the limbo has followed her into hiring interviews. "They do not ask if it works," she said. "They ask if it is safe, and I cannot give them an answer the review has not given me." The questions outlived the ballot that promised to end them.
