The Naturalist Bloc Tries to Turn a Migration Number Into a Border Argument
In Brazil's campaign, the 120-million milestone became a rhetorical weapon nobody asked it to be.

BRASÍLIA — The 120-million figure was published as a humanitarian count. Within a day, Brazil's resurgent Naturalist bloc had recast it as a warning. At a rally Monday night, bloc speakers folded the migration number into their augmentation platform — a single rising tide of "unmanaged change," enhanced citizens and climate migrants named in the same breath as things a nation must decide whether to admit. The move drew a sharp rebuke from relief agencies, who noted that almost none of the 120 million are anywhere near Brazil, and from enhanced-rights groups, who called the pairing a deliberate smear. The incumbent coalition, already fraying, struggled to answer without amplifying it. "They are counting frightened people and augmented people as one problem so they can promise one wall," said São Paulo organizer Beatriz Fontes. The count was meant to summon aid. In one campaign, at least, it is being made to summon a border instead.
