Across an Eighteen-Minute Gulf, Valles Marineris Files Its Census

The Martian colony, just past fifty thousand, sends word that now takes nearly eighteen minutes each way.

VALLES MARINERIS — Every dispatch from Mars arrives already old, and Sunday's arrived seventeen and a half minutes late — the gulf between the planets still widening as their orbits pull apart, up from a little under twelve minutes in the summer. In that delay came the colony's routine population return: 50,000 residents and a little past, the first full census since the settlement cleared the mark at the end of September. Colony administrator Sunita Rao's message, read on Earth nearly a third of an hour after she spoke it, was deliberately dull. "We are counting people, storing water, and repairing the same three airlocks," she said. "That is the news. The absence of news is the news." Of the new arrivals, most came on the last transfer window; the next is months out. On Earth, the one statistic that traveled fastest was the smallest: a child born in Valles this month, the delay's newest citizen, who will grow up thinking eighteen minutes is simply how far away her grandparents are.
