VALLES MARINERIS — The signal arrived seventeen minutes late, as everything from Mars now does while the planets drift apart, and it carried a small domestic milestone: the colony, having passed 50,000 residents late last month, has opened the first dedicated school wing in its western habitat. Colony administrator Anjali Rao, relaying across the widening one-way gap, said 340 children now live in Valles Marineris — the first generation for whom the red canyon is not a posting but a hometown. "We stopped being an outpost the day we needed a second classroom," she said in the delayed transmission. The orbital-station network relayed the dispatch to Earth, where educators noted the quiet significance: a colony that once measured itself in oxygen margins and cargo manifests now measures itself in enrolment. The delay will only lengthen through the year. The town, its administrator said, is here to stay.
