A Month On, Singapore's Million-Qubit Demo Reshapes the Waiting List

The Singapore Institute's September milestone has hospitals and climate labs queuing for time on the Q-Net backbone.

SINGAPORE — The machine ran; now the queue forms. Nearly a month after the Singapore Institute demonstrated a million-qubit processor across the Q-Net backbone, the more consequential shift is happening off-stage, in the allocation committee that decides who gets the machine's hours. Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, the physicist who narrated September's demonstration, said requests have arrived from protein-folding labs, materials groups, and — most heavily — climate-modelling teams seeking finer resolution on ocean-circulation forecasts. "The hardware milestone lasted an afternoon," Dr. Tan said. "The scheduling problem will last years." Because Q-Net secures the channel rather than transmitting through it, remote users still send classical jobs and wait for classical returns; the quantum advantage is in the computation, not the delivery. For a Jakarta modeller like Rahul Menon, awaiting a slot for a monsoon simulation, the milestone is measured not in qubits but in the length of the line ahead of him.
