A Number Is Not a Face, Until You Make It One

We will print the number again this week — past 120 million registered climate migrants, climbing — and we will print it because it is true and because it is the only way to hold a crisis of that size in a single line of type. But I want to say plainly what the number does to us. It rounds. It smooths a hundred and twenty million separate reasons for leaving into a single gray statistic, and a gray statistic asks nothing of the reader. I have watched capable colleagues at Hearth Relief International say "one-twenty" the way one says the weather. That is not their failure; it is the number's. Our duty at this paper is not to stop counting — the count is honest, and Secretary-General Halvorsen is right that capacity must be measured. Our duty is to refuse to let the count be the whole story. Behind the twelfth digit is a Karachi kitchen, a Lisbon list, a schoolteacher on a widening planet. Report the number. Then report the face. A paper that prints only the first has already looked away.
