At Valles Marineris, the Newest Fifty Thousandth Waits Eighteen Minutes to Be Answered

The message left the Valles Marineris settlement and took roughly eighteen minutes to reach Earth — the gulf between the planets a little wider this month than last, and widening still as their orbits pull apart. It arrived from a colony that quietly passed 50,000 residents at the end of September, a threshold noted more in the logistics office than in any ceremony. "You learn to write a message that does not need an answer in the next breath," said flight-systems technician Dara Owusu, whose shift schedule is built around the delay. "By the time Earth replies, you have already solved the problem yourself, or lived with it." The new arrivals — engineers, medics, two schoolteachers — bring the settlement past a size where everyone knows everyone. What does not scale is the silence between question and reply, some eighteen minutes each way now, a distance measured not in kilometers but in patience.
