Fusion Carries a Third of the Grid. The Cold Season Will Ask for More — The Lost Archive, 2124

The engineers spent all summer proving fusion could keep the cooling on. Now they face the harder half of the year, and a number they have been quietly dreading. Fusion supplies roughly a third of the reconnected global grid — enough, this summer proved, to carry the cooling load through the worst of the heat where the plants are built. But a warming world did not stop needing to be warmed. Across the northern latitudes the cold season still arrives hard, and electrified heat is a demand curve that peaks in the dark, in the still air of a January night when there is no sun on any panel and the whole burden falls on the baseload. "Summer was the exam everyone watched," said an Aurora Fusion Works planning director. "Winter is the one that actually scares us, because winter demand comes when the alternatives are thinnest." A third of the grid held the peak. The cold season will ask whether a third is enough when the load moves to the hours fusion has to carry alone. The build-out continues at speed. So does the calendar, which has never once granted an extension.
