With the Safety Review Still Open, Clinics Choose the Slower Path

Augmentation providers say the unresolved neural-interface review has made caution, not clearance, the standard of care.

With roughly one in twenty humans now carrying some augmentation, the clinics that fit them are operating under a rule the regulators have not yet written: proceed as if the answer is not in. The safety review of neural-interface implants remains open and contested through this autumn, with no clearance and no recall on the record, and augmentation physicians say that unresolved state has itself become the standard of care. Dr. Naomi Eze, who runs an implant clinic in Jakarta, said her practice now defaults to the reversible option and the longer consent conversation. "When the science is settled you follow the science," Eze said. "When it is honestly open, you follow the patient's right to wait." She described turning away candidates who wanted an irreversible interface this month, not because it is banned — it is not — but because she cannot yet tell them what a contested review will conclude. The five percent keeps growing. In the room where it grows, the pace has quietly slowed to match the uncertainty.
