A Month After the Million-Qubit Demo, the Hard Part Is Trust

Singapore's processor ran; now physicists ask whether anyone can verify what a machine no human can follow actually computed.

The million-qubit processor the Singapore Institute demonstrated last month over the Q-Net backbone worked — and that, physicists now say, is where the real problem begins. A machine that can run a calculation no human and no ordinary computer can check by hand raises an old question in a sharp new form: how do you trust an answer you cannot independently reproduce? Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, the Institute physicist who has become the demonstration's public voice, is blunt that the field has no settled answer. "We built something that can compute past the point where we can look over its shoulder," Tan said. "So we are building the mathematics of trusting it — verification protocols, cross-checks, proofs that a result is right without redoing it." Q-Net, she stressed, secures the channel; it does not transmit thought or move information faster than light. The engineering triumph, Tan argued, has quietly handed the discipline a philosophy assignment: define what verification even means when the verifier is outmatched. The qubits are the easy part now.
