As Neural-Interface Review Drags On, Users Wait in a Gray Zone
With regulators still deliberating, thousands who already carry the implant live inside an unfinished verdict.

GENEVA — The safety review of Somaform Augmetics' neural-interface line has now run for months without a conclusion, and the people it most affects are not in the hearing room — they are already wearing the device. Roughly five percent of humans now carry some augmentation, and among them a smaller cohort lives with an interface whose regulatory status is neither cleared nor withdrawn, but simply pending. "I was told it was the future. Now I am told to wait. Nobody tells me what to do with the thing already in my head," said interface user Daniel Rocha, a Lisbon logistics coordinator who volunteered for early adoption two years ago. Clinicians report a rise in patients seeking reassurance the review cannot yet give. Augmentation advocates urge patience; safety groups urge caution; the regulator urges only that its work is ongoing. For the augmented, the debate is not abstract. It is a question, asked every morning, that the century has not answered.
