Eighteen Minutes Each Way, the Colony Sends Down a Water Recipe
A dispatch from Valles Marineris arrives with a delay that keeps widening — and a recycling method Earth's dry cities want.

VALLES MARINERIS — The message took a little over eighteen minutes to reach Earth, and by December it will take longer still, as the two planets drift toward the far side of their orbits. In it, engineers at the Valles Marineris colony — now just past 50,000 residents — detailed a closed-loop water-recovery method that reclaims better than 98 percent of every liter, a discipline born of a place where no water arrives by tanker, ever. "We waste nothing because we cannot. Earth is beginning to learn the same arithmetic, only slower," said colony systems engineer Petra Vos, whose team fielded queries from three water-stressed megacities this week. The delay that makes conversation a matter of half-hour turns also makes the colony a laboratory for scarcity Earth is only now entering. The recipe travels one way in eighteen minutes. The lesson underneath it — that a settlement can survive on almost none — has taken humanity a great deal longer to hear.
