We Keep Confusing the Milestone for the Door

We are, as a species, badly in love with round numbers. Fifty thousand on Mars. A hundred and twenty million in migration corridors. Thirty percent of a grid. This week a rift settlement opened a single airlock that sealed, and its administrator told us plainly that the door mattered more than the count — and he is right, and the lesson is not off-world at all. Down here we govern by the milestone and neglect the door. We will convene over a migrant figure past 120 million next week in Geneva, and the number will fill the speeches while the corridor fills with people who do not care what we call the total. The milestone is how we feel; the door is what we build. A reservoir that fills slower, a reactor that holds through a cold snap, a consent form a worker cannot refuse — none of these are round numbers, and all of them are the actual world. The count tells us where we are. Only the door tells us whether anyone can live there.
