Fifty Thousand on Mars, and the Fourth District Opens Its First Airlock
A dispatch that reached Earth eighteen minutes late reports the rift settlement crossing a number it once only dreamed of.

VALLES MARINERIS / EARTH RELAY — Four days after the count crossed fifty thousand, the settlement did the thing that counts more than a number: it opened a door. The fourth district's first pressurized airlock cycled for the first time this week, the administration reported in a dispatch that reached Earth eighteen minutes after the event, admitting the season's newest residents into habitat that did not exist a year ago. The colony has learned to distrust round numbers and trust doors. Fifty thousand is a headline; an airlock that holds pressure is a home. "You do not live in a milestone," administrator Tomas Rhee wrote across the gulf. "You live behind a door that seals. This week we opened a new one, and it sealed, and a family that arrived on the last transit walked through it into a district that is theirs. That is the number I care about — not fifty thousand, but the one airlock that worked today." The fourth district still lacks its full redundancy; the rift's growth has always outrun its margins, and the dust season is coming. But the door holds. The settlement that once dreamed of fifty thousand is now busy, as it always is, with the next fifty airlocks.
